Description

Vector throws players into a world where basic freedom is treated as a crime, leaving parkour as the only real way out. Developed by Nekki, this arcade-style side-scrolling platformer focuses on outrunning a totalitarian regime at every turn. It relies heavily on fast-paced action and precise timing to navigate the gloomy dystopian setting.

Note: Don’t forget to check out other games of the same genre on our website, such as Metachangelion or I The One.

Vector whips the city under the shadow of an unsleeping Big Brother, the city making sure things don’t get out of hand. Whenever you turn, Security Forces are there behind you and force you to vault, slide, and climb over anything. Staying ahead of them involves mixing quick reflexes with planning to keep the momentum rolling at all costs.

As a strictly single-player hybrid of an arcade runner and a platformer, it focuses entirely on the tension of a continuous chase. Blending those runner mechanics with platforming strategy works well, though it definitely leans hard on trial and error to get through tougher spots. You essentially play through a narrative of rebellion by simply refusing to get caught by the authorities.

The animations feel surprisingly heavy and realistic thanks to the game’s use of Cascadeur animation tools. When sliding under barriers or leaping across gaps, every run, vault, and climb looks genuinely fluid. However, this commitment to realistic movement means the animations take a split second to play out, punishing you heavily if you press a button too late.

Figuring out the exact timing for these movements is the only way to keep your speed up. For instance, you’ll quickly learn that vaulting over a low obstacle is usually faster than just jumping it. It takes quite a bit of practice to figure out the most efficient parkour moves to handle different barriers.

Vector’s unique look is derived not from complex textures or super detailed character models, but a striking silhouette art style. The dark shadows and the light city constantly seek to create flashes of contrast for the runner fleeing the surveillance state.

This distinct aesthetic does an excellent job of reinforcing the feeling of isolation and urgency as the protagonist flees. You are basically just a dark shape running for your life against a massive, unyielding city backdrop. It proves that clever art direction often tells a story better than purely realistic graphics ever could.

This standard runner gains narrative strength from the perspective of ‘Big Brother’ from Cell by escape, rebellion and freedom. You serve as a symbol of resistance in a totalitarian society and suppress basic individuality. The story is more like an underlying theme than a cinematic narrative, meaning those looking for a lot of dialogue or lore will be let down.

However, the fast gameplay is grounded in a clear struggle for liberty, with security forces trying to catch you. Each time you manage to avoid capture and beat a tough stage, it feels like a little victory against the system. There is enough narrative context to keep you moving in the more difficult levels.

In Vector, getting started is incredibly easy since the intuitive controls let anyone pick up the basics of running and sliding right away. Across the 40-plus available levels, which include remastered content, these simple inputs turn into massive fast-paced timing puzzles. The difficulty spikes noticeably in later stages, requiring you to hit swipe commands with absolute perfection to survive.

When trying to earn high scores or stars on a tricky path, you have to memorize the level layouts completely. This reliance on rote memorization means you will be repeating the exact same stages over and over until muscle memory takes over. It certainly rewards dedication, but replaying the same path endlessly to get a perfect run can definitely test your patience.

As the main Vector campaign starts to feel repetitive, it gets turned upside down with Hunter Mode that lets you play as the security forces. When you’re the one trying to capture a runner instead of running away yourself, it adds a really strategic spin to the basic mechanics. It will take about a minute to get accustomed to this mode since you start predicting an opponent’s movements instead of making them.

On top of that, PC players get an exclusive Level Creator tool to design and share their own parkour courses. Building user-generated content adds tons of replayability by supplying endless new paths to try. Unfortunately, mobile players completely miss out on this creative tool and are stuck entirely with the base levels.

Fans of arcade platformers will find a lot to like in Vector. The fluid animations and distinct silhouette style make the constant pressure of evading security forces highly entertaining. Surviving the harder sections takes a lot of patience, but relying on in-game boosters and gadgets can help push through the most brutal spots.
