Description
Reigns: The Witcher is a story-rich adventure game with swipe-based decisions. In the game, users will become Geralt of Rivia and a legendary monster hunter. However, the story is not a conventional RPG. Let us first go into the details of this game.
Note: Don’t forget to check out some other outstanding games on our website, such as Reigns and Reigns: Her Majesty.
The Witcher: Reigns takes an entirely different approach to The Witcher: swiping right to make card choices like in the Reigns games instead of controlling Geralt. Today there are no action battle sequences take long nor do role-playing quests take ages. Every situation has now been reduced to a card with choices one needs to make.
Zereth varies from monster hunts, village problems to dealing with your relationships with Yennefer, Triss, the other witchers at the school. The choices you make alter your story, and the sensation that you are writing your own version of the legend.
Remarkably, the stories are recounted from the point of view of Dandelion – the romantic poet and friend of Geralt. The game may progress slowly, but it is full of excitement, as there is a danger to every card played. In particular, making a wrong choice of storyline can get Geralt into unexpected situations while a good and bold selection provides a new and unexpected storyline.
Reigns: The Witcher has you back to swiping left and right on a card, much like the other titles in the series. What makes it different is that now every choice you can make is connected to the context, characters, and the moral gray area of the Witcher world.
Geralt’s situations are condensed into short but sharp descriptions: sometimes it’s villagers pleading for help, other times it’s a request to hunt monsters, and at other times it’s a delicate emotional conflict. This simplified gameplay makes the game accessible, but it’s precisely this simplicity that opens up great depth, as each choice entails variables in four crucial attributes: power, reputation, allies, and resources.
All four fluctuate based on the player’s actions, creating a loop that is both tense and captivating. Just one attribute falling to a dangerous level can cause Geralt to lose power, be hunted, fail his mission, or end the story prematurely.
One of the most obvious strengths of Reigns: The Witcher is its incredibly flexible non-linear storyline. The game doesn’t try to lead the player down a single path; Instead, it continuously unfolds into branches, both large and small, depending on previous choices, making each playthrough feel like rewriting Geralt’s life in a completely new way.
Geralt sometimes becomes a wanted man due to his tough decisions, and other times he gains fame as a hero saving the Northern Lands. Interacting with familiar characters like Yennefer, Triss, Jaskier, and Vesemir also changes the storyline: choosing who to side with, who to help, and who to abandon all lead to different outcomes.
Many events unlock only when players correctly combine decisions across multiple consecutive playthroughs, creating an extremely high replay value. Despite using a simple card mechanism, the game still conveys the complex spirit of the Witcher world: there are no completely right or wrong choices, only consequences that are logical or unexpected according to the story.
Reigns: The Witcher doesn’t turn Geralt into an action-packed warrior like in CD Projekt RED’s original game, but it retains the spirit of monster hunting – an integral part of a witcher’s life. Instead of direct combat, the game simulates confrontations in the form of minimalist mini-games: players must make a series of precise decisions to analyze monsters, prepare oil, choose appropriate spells, and react in each stage of the battle.
Each monster – from drowners and ekimmara to less common creatures – has a card describing its behavior, weaknesses, and unexpected situations, requiring players to carefully read the situation before making a choice. A wrong choice can lead to Geralt being injured, failing the mission, or losing the villagers’ trust. Interestingly, the monster hunting missions are all told from Dandelion’s perspective, making each battle, despite its minimalist style, feel like a legendary story being recorded.
One of the game’s best traits is the usage of Dandelion as the principal narrator in Reigns: The Witcher. Through the eyes of a poet writing about Geralt’s adventures instead of a (traditional) recounting, it is given a romantic, lyrical and an overblown point of view.
The atmosphere in this one is very different from the typical gloomy tone that The Witcher employs. It is lighter and humorous while still being emotional. Dandelion’s narration is not just a description of events happening in the world, he reacts to the player’s decisions too, sometimes being playful, and other times regretful. It gives the impression that it is a friend who watches Geralt’s every move.
Reigns: The Witcher is a rare but incredibly natural combination of minimalist swipe-to-play gameplay and the deep world of The Witcher. The game retains the core choice-and-consequences spirit of the series, but expresses it in a lighter, more humorous, and more narrative way thanks to Dandelion’s voiceover.
