Description

In Nihilumbra, you play as Born, a shadowy little creature trying to escape the literal nothingness of the Void that created it. The whole hook of this puzzle-platformer is using different colors to paint your way out of trouble while an endless darkness chases you down.

Note: Don’t forget to check out other games of the same genre on our website, such as Into the Dead 2: Unleashed or The Wanderer.

Nihilumbra throws you into a pretty gloomy setting where you control Born, a tiny shadow on the run from the very Void that spawned it. The game leans heavily into its melancholic mood, delivering a story about trying to escape a doomed fate.

You’ll jump and run through five different desolate landscapes, figuring out environmental puzzles along the way. It’s strictly a single-player trip that focuses entirely on keeping Born out of the Void’s reach.

In Nihilumbra, you start with literally nothing, but eventually unlock five different colors that change how the physics of the environment behave. Painting blue makes the ground super slippery like ice, while green turns normal terrain into a bouncy trampoline. Figuring out which color goes where takes a bit of practice, especially since you have to manage your painted spots carefully.

In order to make your way beneath a low roof and strike across a perilous chasm, blue and green must combine. In the more challenging parts of the game, erasing color and clearing away the surrounding blocks offers a good strategy. You will most likely need to do a little trial and error to see how the paints react with game physics.

Instead of cutting away to cutscenes, Nihilumbra actually throws text right onto the screen while a narrator talks you through Born’s personal struggles. You’ll often be actively jumping around the level while listening to these philosophical lines about escaping your past. Trying to absorb the heavy themes while focusing on the platforming can sometimes divide your attention, though.

The script digs deep into ideas of existence and finding purpose against all odds. It’s worth paying close attention to what the narrator says, because those lines occasionally drop subtle hints for upcoming puzzle mechanics. Grasping the true meaning behind the dialogue might go over some players’ heads at first, but it ties the whole game together.

Nihilumbra doesn’t just let you solve puzzles at your own pace, since the Void is constantly hunting you down. When you get locked into one of the tense chase sequences, this creeping darkness literally consumes the ground right behind your feet. These high-pressure moments can definitely cause a few panic deaths until you memorize the layout.

Surviving the chase means you have to swap and paint colors incredibly fast just to stay ahead of the doom. Luckily, the checkpoint system is pretty forgiving, so messing up just throws you right back into the action. You’ll still face a decent amount of trial and error before nailing the perfect escape route.

The hand-drawn art style gives the whole game a really somber, lonely vibe from start to finish. When you’re trudging through the frozen mountains or crossing scorching deserts, the environments feel almost like moody paintings. That constant melancholic atmosphere might honestly feel a bit too bleak if you just want a cheerful platformer.

The visuals use a lot of light and shadow, leaning heavily into a look that fans of games like Limbo will easily recognize. Each of the five worlds looks completely different, but they all share that same desolate energy. Sometimes the dark foregrounds make it slightly tough to spot edges, but the art style mostly works for the story being told.

Álvaro Lafuente composed the original soundtrack, and it hits that exact contemplative, haunting mood Nihilumbra goes for. While you wander around the empty landscapes, the slow music matches the heavy emotional weight of Born’s journey. The strictly somber tracks might lack variety if you prefer upbeat tunes, but they definitely fit the gloomy vibe.

Ambient audio effects also kick in to make the empty environments feel a little more real. The mix of quiet background noises and the main score builds up a cohesive soundscape that backs up the philosophical tone. You’ll probably want to play with headphones to catch the subtler sound cues, though getting stuck on a puzzle means listening to the same moody loops for a while.

Nihilumbra ends up being a solid pick if you like games with heavy narrative themes. It shares some DNA with older hits like Braid or Limbo, mostly relying on that clever color-painting mechanic to carry the gameplay. Dealing with the frequent trial and error can definitely test your patience when the puzzles get complicated.
