Description

Getting a pure arcade run-and-gun shooter on mobile usually means dealing with a ton of clutter. Metal Soldiers 4 Pro ditches all the ads and in-app purchases for a straightforward, premium 2.5D side-scrolling experience. It just drops you straight into the combat without any annoying paywalls getting in the way.

Note: Don’t forget to check out other games of the same genre on our website, such as Metal Soldiers 2 or Metal Soldiers 3.

The whole game feels like a throwback to old-school arcade cabinets, but built for modern phones. You run, jump, and blast through hordes of basic foot soldiers, annoying flying drones, and massive mechs. The levels flip between dense jungles and ruined cities, keeping the backdrop changing as you push forward.

Staying alive means keeping on the move and relying on quick reflexes to dodge incoming fire. It definitely brings back that classic, punishing difficulty where you have to actually learn enemy patterns. Every stage is packed with explosions and chaotic shootouts, demanding your full attention if you want to clear the objectives.

The developers went with a 2.5D look, dropping crisp 2D character sprites right into fully 3D backgrounds. While tracking enemies across these deep environments looks cool, the visual contrast might not click for players who prefer pure retro pixel art.

This setup keeps the action readable even when the screen fills up with enemy fire. When you’re trying to spot a specific target during a chaotic jungle firefight, the sharp 2D art really pops against the softer 3D backgrounds. It strikes a neat balance between old-school nostalgia and modern hardware capabilities.

Sometimes running on foot gets too tough, so the game lets you hijack heavy machinery like a Battle Tank, a nimble Helicopter, or a giant Mech. Piloting a massive mech and wiping out a screen full of enemies in seconds is an absolute blast. However, since these rides only offer temporary invincibility, relying too heavily on them without practicing standard combat will eventually get you killed.

Each vehicle changes how you approach a fight and deals massive damage to tougher bosses. Figuring out exactly when to jump into a tank during a heavy firefight takes a bit of trial and error. Mastering these temporary power-ups ends up being crucial for surviving the later stages.

Because this is a paid title, you won’t find a single ad or microtransaction anywhere in the menus. Unlocking a new character after a grueling mission feels great when you know you earned it through pure gameplay rather than swiping a credit card. The trade-off is that you actually have to put in the work to progress, as there are no shortcut purchases to bail you out of a tough spot.

Everything from late-game weapons to character skins gets unlocked naturally as you play. It’s honestly refreshing to finish a level and just move on to the next screen without dodging banner ads. The pro tag just means you get the entire, balanced game upfront for a single price.

You start off with standard handguns and assault rifles, but eventually get your hands on heavy rocket launchers and flashy energy weapons. Taking the resources you earned from a run to upgrade your favorite gun’s fire rate at the shop makes a noticeable difference. Of course, pouring all your materials into one weapon type is risky if a later boss requires a completely different loadout.

Finding the right weapon for the job is half the battle when the difficulty ramps up. Swapping to a maxed-out rocket launcher right as an epic boss spawns in feels incredibly satisfying. You really have to experiment with the different gear to figure out what fits your playstyle best.

You aren’t stuck playing as the same generic soldier for the whole campaign. Completing missions gradually unlocks a roster of different heroes, and picking the right commando for a specific stage can completely change your approach. While it is fun to collect them all, some characters naturally won’t fit how you play and might just end up collecting dust on the selection screen.

These aren’t just simple palette swaps either, as the different heroes actually tweak the core gameplay. Swapping characters between runs adds a nice layer of variety to the standard shooting mechanics. Putting together a squad that covers all your bases is a big part of the progression.

In the side-scrolling stages, you will find quite a few nooks and crannies hidden off the beaten track To snoop in hidden corners during a fight can reveal valuable upgrade resources hidden off the beaten track. If you decide to wander off looking for loot, note that you expose yourself to extra enemy ambushes as well.

Most levels are capped off with a huge boss fight that takes up nearly the entire screen if you survive the gauntlet. The bosses will test everything you’ve come to learn requiring some serious pattern memorization to beat. Grabbing the hidden upgrade materials early in the level makes these showdowns a bit easier.

Fans who grew up pumping quarters into Contra or Metal Slug will find a lot of familiar DNA here. Metal Soldiers 4 Pro brings back that pure, skill-based action that forces you to rely on fast reflexes instead of pay-to-win mechanics. The mix of tight shooting and wild vehicular combat makes the gameplay loop pretty addictive once you get the hang of it.
