Description

Barry Steakfries is back for a time-traveling zombie apocalypse in Age of Zombies. This twin-stick shooter drops players into different historical and futuristic eras to fight off massive hordes of the undead. It offers a clean, arcade-style setup that focuses heavily on fast-paced action rather than deep storytelling.

Halfbrick Studios built this top-down shoot ’em up entirely around surviving wave after wave of undead. Players take control of Barry Steakfries as he drops cheesy one-liners and tries to save the world. Fending off these endless zombie swarms across different time periods blends standard action with a silly take on survival horror.

Getting the hang of the controls while keeping Barry alive requires some fast reflexes. You’ll find yourself constantly backing away from the growing mobs just to give yourself a little breathing room. The sheer number of enemies onscreen can get overwhelming if you aren’t paying attention.

The main story campaign in Age of Zombies jumps through different eras, throwing you into prehistoric times, ancient Egypt, and even feudal Japan. Navigating ancient Egyptian tombs while fending off historically themed foes definitely breaks up the usual zombie routine. Dealing with a giant Zombie T-Rex early on sets a ridiculous tone for the rest of the campaign.

Constantly shifting from the past to futuristic settings keeps the twin-stick action moving at a brisk pace. Adjusting to the new enemy types in each time period always takes a bit of practice. The changing visuals are great, though the actual core objective rarely shifts from simply shooting everything in sight.

Anyone familiar with Jetpack Joyride or Monster Dash will immediately recognize Barry Steakfries and his trademark cheesy action hero one-liners. Spouting witty dialogue while getting cornered by a mob makes the whole situation feel like an absurd comedy rather than actual survival horror. The self-aware humor heavily drives the narrative forward between the shooting segments.

This constant barrage of jokes works well, though the specific brand of humor might not click for everyone. The dialogue definitely lightens the mood during what would otherwise be a grim struggle to stay alive. Focusing entirely on a single comedic character means the game never really attempts any serious worldbuilding.

Age of Zombies scatters weapons and power-ups everywhere, pointing them out with handy on-screen arrows. Players will constantly swap out reliable shotguns for rapid-fire miniguns, or even end up riding a Zombie T-Rex to stomp the horde. Still, trying to grab a specific weapon drop while dodging massive enemy groups remains incredibly risky.

Conserving your grenades and heavier firepower for tougher enemies is basically a requirement if you want to survive the later waves. You have to stay mobile and keep hunting for those drops just to maintain your offensive momentum. Relying too heavily on the basic gun is a quick way to get yourself cornered when the spawn rates increase.

Once you finish the main story, a wave-based Survival or Horde mode opens up for competitive scoring. This mode relies entirely on quick reflexes to handle the increasingly difficult enemy waves that constantly spawn in. Trying to survive just one more wave when you have practically no health left brings a lot of tension to the arcade action.

The game also features a local co-op option that lets two to four players team up using split-screen functionality. Sharing the screen with friends during a chaotic zombie apocalypse gets incredibly frantic. Coordinating your shots in co-op mode definitely takes practice, as it becomes very easy to lose track of your character in the mess.

Barry is frequently dropping clever pop culture references during his shooting. Noticing these nods in the middle of splashing action brings a wonderful goofy layer to the shoot ’em up formula. This particular style of hilarious comedy is one that Halfbrick Studios uses a lot of.

Age of Zombies clearly never takes itself too seriously. That constant barrage of jokes means players looking for genuine survival horror elements will be totally out of luck here. Still, the lighthearted tone works well enough to keep the intense gameplay from feeling like a chore.

Using the terrain to funnel the zombie hordes is usually the only way to avoid becoming zombie fodder. When you take too much damage, retreating to a quiet corner to let your health automatically regenerate becomes your top priority. Hiding behind obstacles to heal is effective, but it completely stalls the fast-paced momentum of the combat.

Fans of classic twin-stick shooters will appreciate how this title delivers straightforward, arcade-style action. It really leans on the comedic tone established by Barry Steakfries to carry the overall package. Getting comfortable with the movement mechanics might take a few tries before everything finally clicks.

Age of Zombies manages to mix frantic shooting with time-traveling mayhem and a lot of goofy humor. The core gameplay loop relies heavily on the diverse settings and Barry Steakfries’ personality to keep things interesting. Firing blindly into a crowd of undead while trying to backpedal requires some decent thumb coordination on a touchscreen.
