Flat Zombies is a side-scrolling shooter with a fairly simple concept, but it has its own appeal thanks to how it puts players in a very direct situation: standing in a narrow hallway and fighting off relentless waves of zombies. When I first started, I thought it was just a fun shooting game, nothing special. But after a few rounds, the tension started to become more apparent. There’s not much room to run, no wide map to dodge; you can only move forward, backward, and shoot quickly to maintain distance.

After playing for a while, I realized Flat Zombies is captivating because it’s easy to get into, but difficult to survive for long. The early waves are light, the zombies move slowly, and I can shoot quite comfortably. But later on, the number increases, the speed increases, and even a slight delay in shooting will get you cornered. In fact, during gameplay, there were times when my heart raced, knowing that one wrong move would mean defeat. This feeling arises because the game constantly puts you in a corner, not giving you much breathing room.

The first thing you’ll notice in Flat Zombies is the fact that you are stuck in a long, thin corridor where zombies attack you from either side. Although it sounds a bit basic, I eventually noticed that the confined space creates its own tension after playing for a while. You don’t have much room to run around or dodge, you can only go forward and backward and shoot quickly.

In reality, during gameplay, there were times when I was cornered against a wall, with a horde of zombies charging towards me and no way to retreat. It felt suffocating, my fingers flailing, just hoping to shoot down a few zombies to create some space. This feeling arises because the game doesn’t give you many choices; every decision is very direct: shoot or lose.

For a while I was moving back and forth quickly trying to judge the distances and get my positioning right to take the wave. Survive as long as you can without having to use complex maps or complex missions. This simplicity is, for me, what makes Flat Zombies so compelling, as each round is a measure of reflexes and composure.

The weapon system in Flat Zombies is another aspect that prevents boredom from setting in. When I first started playing, I had a few low-level guns that fires slowly and requires precise aiming. But after a little bit of playtime and unlocking types of guns, I was able to see the difference. Some guns fire quickly but are weak, some are powerful but have long reload times, and some have a great area-of-effect fire when zombies are crowded together.

In reality, I often switch weapons depending on the situation. When zombies are sparse, I use my ammo-saving guns, and when they swarm, I switch to more powerful ones to clear them quickly. Sometimes, switching weapons is a bit slow, and I get cornered. This feeling arises because the game forces you to pay attention to the rhythm of the battle and choose weapons wisely, rather than sticking with one gun from beginning to end.

After a few rounds, I started to develop my favorite gun, but I still like to try other weapons to see how effective they are. Unlocking and testing new weapons motivates me to keep playing, not just to survive, but also to see what I’ll use next time.

Flat Zombies builds its experience around successive waves of zombies, each wave becoming larger and more difficult. When I first started, the initial waves were quite easy, and I felt confident and could shoot at a leisurely pace. But after playing for a while, the number of zombies increased significantly, the speed also increased, and I started to feel the real pressure.

In reality, during gameplay, there were matches where I got through dozens of waves, my hands were already tired, and my eyes were strained trying to keep up with each zombie. Sometimes, just a slight delay in reloading would cause me to be immediately overwhelmed. This feeling arises because the game constantly pushes the player’s limits, not giving you the feeling of “it’s done.” There’s always a more difficult wave waiting.

Flat Zombies has a very minimalist graphic style, immediately noticeable as a monochrome 2D game with few details, mainly using black and gray as the background. When I first started the game, I thought the graphics were a bit monotonous, with nothing to look at. But after playing for a while, I found that this simplicity helped me focus more on the action. Zombies appear clearly on the smooth background, not visually cluttered, so I only need to glance to know where the target is to shoot.

Regarding sound, Flat Zombies also maintains a minimalist style similar to the graphics. The gunshots are dry, concise, and each shot is clearly audible. The sounds of zombies being hit or falling aren’t overly elaborate, but enough to let me know that a target has been eliminated. After playing for a while, I noticed that the game doesn’t use much background music, or if it does, it’s very light. In fact, during the experience, the silence interspersed with the gunshots made me feel more tense, because all my attention was focused on each shot.

Flat Zombies doesn’t tell a long story, nor does it have a vast world to explore. It focuses entirely on survival and reflexes. For me, this is the kind of game you can open up and play a few short rounds to see how long you can last, and then want to play again just to surpass your own record.
